Is peanut butter SAFE for dogs? | Veterinarian Dr. Lisa answers (2018)

Have you ever wondered if peanut butter is safe for your dog? Guess what, you’re not alone. A lot of pet parents have. Well, in today’s video, I’m going to share with you if it’s fact or fiction. Coming right up! Hi there! I’m Dr. Lisa Littlejohn. I am a real-life veterinarian that is passionate about helping pet parents like you become the best care givers possible. In today’s video, I’m actually going to share with you if peanut butter is safe or not for your dog. And I have good news for you: peanut butter is actually safe for your dog as long as 1) they’re not allergic to peanuts and 2) it does not contain xylitol. Check the label really well for me and make sure that there’s no ‘xylitol’ that’s X-Y-L-I-T-O-L. What xylitol is is a sugar alcohol or sugar substitute that is commonly found in diabetic friendly foods like sure free gum, candies, and even mints. What happens when a dog accidentally ingest xylitol is it actually causes the blood sugar to dramatically drop and what happens with that is that your dog becomes weak, disoriented, may develop tremors and even can have seizures. And sadly, it could even become life-threatening. So if your dog happens to ingest xylitol, please take them to the emergency clinic right away! I don’t want anything bad to happen to you or your loved one. So now I’m actually going to show you my kids enjoying some peanut butter but before we do that I’m gonna let you in on a little secret, so DON’T tell your dog I told you this: peanut butter is actually a great way to hide medication if you have to give your baby medicine. You’ll ‘thank me’ later! There you have it! Peanut butter is actually safe to give your dog as long as he’s not allergic to it and there’s not xylitol in it. If you found this video helpful, please please please give me a big thumbs up and share it with your family and friends. I wholeheartedly believe that the more families I can reach, the more pets I can help live a longer, happier, and healthier life! Until next time, keep those tails waggin’ and I look forward to seeing you very soon!
